Diamonds are forever, but the Cabot Guns Diamond 1911 is rarer than any diamond. A gem of a pistol, the Cabot Diamond comprises a limited offering of only two pistols constructed from unique diamond-patterned Mosaic Damascus steel crafted by the Master of All Damascus and American Treasure Robert Eggerling.
While Damascus steel may have origins in the Far East, Mosaic Damascus is a uniquely American artform. We first set eyes on this unique billet of Damascus a couple of years ago, prior to the Master of all Damascus Robert Eggerling’s retirement from his craft. We have seen and are intimately familiar with Robert Eggerling’s Mosaic designs, and I recall being quite taken by this material while still in its raw state. It has always been a mystery how Robert creates his Mosaic patterns. Each Mosaic block is very deliberate in design. Somehow, at the age of 88, Robert created something completely new in yet another example of the remarkable creativity of this important American artist.
The obvious diamond pattern throughout the material became a self-evident theme for the pistol as it took shape at the hands of our machinists, craftsmen, and gunsmiths. The project was immediately coined the Eggerling Diamond, which carries over into the provenance of these two uniquely spectacular pistols as they bear serial numbers DIAMOND-1 and DIAMOND-2, engraved in steel for all time.
Pushing limits, as embodied in the ethos of Cabot’s company culture and expressed in our work, led to further embellishment of the project. Adorning the pistol are lab-grown diamonds set at the magazine release, slide stop, thumb safety pin, hammer pin, and sear pin. A Cabot 1911 should dazzle, and that it does.
Precision, purpose, and craft embody every component of the Eggerling Diamond 1911. The diamond front sight is crafted with watchmaker precision, utilizing 18k gold and a high-grade gem or diamond. Unlike a conventional 1911 sight that relies on a side-cut dovetail, Cabot’s design employs a reverse dovetail installed from the front of the slide. This approach keeps the sight permanently at zero and prevents any possibility of drift, delivers a structurally superior lock-up that cannot come loose, and eliminates side cuts on the slide for a clean, snag-free profile.
Setting the diamond or precious stone requires additional hand craftsmanship. An 18k yellow gold rod is turned on a watchmaker’s lathe to form a precise cavity that receives a custom-fitted high-grade gem or diamond; the assembly is seated into the front of the sight and permanently locked by hammering a fine gold rod into a 0.7 mm hole drilled from the underside.
In total, the Cabot Diamond pistols are embellished with six diamonds as indicated above. In a moment of harmonious serendipity, careful observation will note that the slide also contains six mosaics of diamonds within the Damascus pattern. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. It makes one wonder as to the subconscious of Eggerling and his expression, as these billets were made at the end of his extraordinary career.
The frames of the pistols are precisely crafted from 100% American billet steel to the aerospace tolerances that have defined Cabot as unique in the industry. The frame is finished in a rich black Diamond-Like Carbon deposition, while our best-in-class artisans approached the small parts with another new technique never seen before on a Cabot 1911. Cabot Master Gunsmith & Wizard Nick Clark developed a new finishing process we have named Nitre Bronzing. Applied to the hand-polished slide and the small parts—thumb safety, grip safety, slide stop, barrel bushing, and grip screws—it perfectly complements the bronze tones elicited from the Mosaic Damascus.
The Diamond 1911, chambered in classic .45 ACP, this rare deserves an equally rare case. The Eggerling Damascus 1911 is housed in a museum-grade S.A. Parker case that is thematically created to accompany each pistol and represents the highest possible standards in the art of hand-crafted American cases.
