Lightning does not ask permission. It finds the shortest path through air, wood, and steel, and it writes that path in a single stroke.
This one-of-one Cabot 1911 in .45 ACP begins where every Cabot begins: in the hands of Cabot’s master machinists and gunsmiths, who shape and craft the pistol from American stainless steel. The architecture is Cabot’s—slide to frame, lockup, trigger, the quiet work that makes a 1911 shoot as if it were born that way. Only then does the piece leave the shop to become a collaboration among three benches that do not ordinarily share a room: Cabot Guns, casemaker Mark Huston, and FEGA Master Engraver Otto Carter. The pistol and its presentation piece were conceived as one event. The case is not a box that happens to hold a gun. It is the first surface the strike touches.
Huston began on the open face of live-edge wood. Electric probes were set to the timber and voltage was driven across the grain. The current did what current does when it is given no straight road: it branched, forked, searched, and burned a Lichtenberg figure into the wood—fern and lightning in the same mark, the pattern a storm leaves when it finds a tree. The live edge was left honest. The figure was left to read as impact, not decoration.
Carter then took the stainless pistol as if it had been standing in that same instant. He engraved Lichtenberg lines into the steel so the discharge would not stop at the wood. The lines travel from the case onto the gun without a break in the story—across the frame and slide, then onto the parts that usually remain untouched: slide stop, thumb safety, mainspring housing, and grip safety. The strike surrounds the pistol. It does not ornament one plane and abandon the rest.
Exhibition-grade Circassian walnut grips carry an inlaid Cabot medallion. The American stainless steel wears a patina finish—light settled on surfaces that have already been through fire. At the center sits Cabot’s trademark Tristar trigger: the one measured, mechanical certainty inside a field of branching chaos.
Set into the display are two large pieces of prime Gibeon meteorite, remnants from Cabot’s Big Bang pistol-set project. Together they comprise an estimated 5.8 cubic inches—about 1.68 pounds, or 759 grams—of iron that condensed some 4.5 billion years ago in the core of a shattered world, long before there was an Earth to receive it. They are not props. They are the other half of the weather: what falls when the sky opens.
