There is a magical place hidden deep in the woods of rural western Pennsylvania—a workshop where time stands still and art comes alive in the hands of a master. This is the home of Robert Eggerling, a world-class blacksmith and artist. At 87 years old, Eggerling remains an American treasure, revered for his incredible skill in crafting Mosaic Damascus steel. His artistry is legendary, and for those fortunate enough to know his work, it’s easy to see why.
In October 2022, Cabot CEO Rob Bianchin had the privilege of visiting Robert’s workshop, accompanied by a videographer. We spent three days documenting his creative process, capturing the intricate steps of transforming raw steel into something truly extraordinary. Over the course of those days, we not only watched Robert design and forge a stunning Mosaic Damascus but also witnessed the birth of a pistol that would ultimately become part of something far greater. This experience was beautifully captured in our documentary, Master of All Damascus, which showcases the true genius of Eggerling’s work in both metal and design.
Now, we are proud to present the culmination of that journey—a set of three limited-edition Robert Eggerling Signature pistols. These firearms are more than just objects; they are the physical embodiment of the passion and craftsmanship that Robert poured into every piece of steel he touched. Each pistol is uniquely serialized, with numbers ranging from RE1OF3 to RE3OF3, reflecting both the man’s initials and the rarity of this offering.
What makes these pistols truly special is the material from which they were crafted. The Mosaic Damascus steel that forms the grips and triggers was forged by Robert himself during our time together in his workshop. This steel, shaped and polished to perfection, reveals the intricate and mesmerizing W-pattern for which Eggerling is renowned. The transformation from raw metal to finished masterpiece took place in our own shop, where every detail was honed to bring out the rich, hidden colors and textures of the Damascus.
The artistry doesn’t end there. The slide of each pistol is engraved with designs personally crafted by Robert, with every stroke faithfully reproduced from his original hand-drawn artwork, a process you can witness beginning at the 22:53 mark of the documentary, Master of All Damascus. It was important to us that his signature, not just in style but in spirit, be etched into the very fabric of these firearms. That’s why we engraved Robert’s actual signature onto the frame, cementing his personal touch on every piece.
Chambered in .45 ACP, these pistols are not only powerful symbols of craftsmanship but also serve as a tribute to Robert Eggerling’s unparalleled contribution to the world of Damascus steel. It has been a profound honor to work alongside Robert, to witness his creative process firsthand, and to collaborate in bringing this limited edition to life. He is a rare artist, one of a kind, and these pistols stand as a testament to his legacy.
In every respect, the Robert Eggerling Signature Pistol is more than a firearm—it is a living piece of American history, a tribute to an artist who has dedicated his life to elevating the art of forging steel. We are deeply honored to present this collection to you as a symbol of craftsmanship, artistry, and respect for one of America’s greatest living craftsmen.
