Suffering

A singular, hand-engraved masterpiece pistol by Cabot Guns

Crafted by Cabot Guns and exquisitely engraved by FEGA Master Engraver Lee Griffiths, it was recently presented at the 2025 Firearms Engravers Guild Annual Meeting, where it earned “Best Engraved Handgun” and “Best in Show” honors from fellow FEGA Master Engravers, celebrating Griffiths’ extraordinary artistry. Griffiths channels the Old Testament theme of suffering, reinterpreting Gustave Doré’s biblical illustrations with his meticulous hand. On the central canvas along the left slide, he engraves Slaughter of the Syrians by the Children of Israel (1 Kings 20:29), inspired by Doré’s 1866 Bible series. His steady hand carves a vivid foreground of Israelite warriors clashing with Syrians, their sharp, angular lines and deep shadows pulsing with violence, while a sprawling, mountainous background—etched with tiny fleeing figures and jagged peaks under a brooding, cross-hatched sky—echoes Doré’s atmospheric depth.

The left grip panel and rear slide quadrant feature Griffiths’ rendition of The World Destroyed by Water (Genesis 6:7), capturing the Great Flood’s divine fury on this Cabot Guns creation. His engraving animates turbulent waves with swirling, forceful lines crashing over jagged peaks, while desperate figures—clinging to rocks or sinking into the deluge—reveal his precise detailing: wind-torn hair, drenched garments, and faces etched with dread. Griffiths contrasts this chaos with a faint, ethereal glow piercing storm-heavy clouds he’s painstakingly cross-hatched, amplifying the scene’s supernatural weight. On the right slide, he engraves The Destruction of the Armies of the Ammonites and Moabites (2 Chronicles 20:24), depicting fallen warriors in tangled heaps, their lifeless forms starkly outlined. Above, Judah’s witnesses stand in awe, framed by Griffiths’ rugged wilderness of cliffs and sparse trees under a turbulent sky, its fine lines hinting at divine intervention.

The right grip panel showcases The Deluge (Genesis 7:23), the flood’s devastating peak, masterfully engraved on this Cabot Guns pistol. The engraving features a jagged rock as humanity’s last refuge, with figures—twisted in terror, clutching children—locked in a doomed struggle against towering waves rendered with frothy, swirling intensity. Griffiths’ intricate handwork shapes submerged hills fading into mist and a heavy sky of cross-hatched clouds, pierced by a subtle light, symbolizing faint hope amid wrath. Each stroke transforms this Cabot Guns 1911 into a storytelling canvas, Griffiths’ artistry breathing new life into Doré’s vision, merging technical mastery with the raw emotion of biblical suffering.
