66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, there was one undisputed monarch of the world. In a time before time, when size, strength, and domination defined success and ensured a legacy, the Tyrannosaurus Rex reigned supreme. Just so, the 1911 has been the ultimate handgun, dominating the firearms landscape with its majesty for well over 100 years. The fearsome predator walked the American West, with fossils found in states such as Montana and South Dakota. Like the American Frontiersmen who would, millions of years later, tame the very same soil, the T. Rex relied on its wits and weaponry to conquer. The thoughtful pairing of the apex predator and the talon of the free world sends a stark and clear message – woe to the one who challenges the king. Today, with the release of our One of A Kind limited edition set of pistols, the T. Rex can now roam the American West once again.
Acquired in 2017 by Cabot CEO Rob Bianchin during one of our many dedicated travels around the world to procure some of the rarest materials on Earth, a femur fragment from a T. Rex was meticulously crafted into the grips of these pistols. The fragment in total was capable of producing three sets of grips, with an incredible texture that was entirely unexpected. The fossil, upon initial review, looked much like what anyone would expect a bone hardened to stone over millions of years to reflect, the flat, somewhat uninteresting tone of stone, instead of the majesty of the beast it once was. Upon cutting into the femur, the soul of the Tyrannosaurus and its legacy was unearthed. The stunning texture of the grips invokes what one would imagine the scaled exterior of a dinosaur would have looked like during their dominion of the Earth, and the rich undertones demand attention.
To match the majesty of the T. Rex fossil grips encasing both sides of the pistol, FEGA Master Engraver Otto Carter once again returned to the Cabot Guns government frame as a canvas. In our Portrait of a Craftsman documentary discussing Carter’s work, he and Bianchin together worked through the design elements of this pistol. Inspired by the talons of the predator, Carter engraved the rolling pattern of claws that grace the slide and frame give the visual effect of forward motion to the handgun, racing towards the muzzle, just as the T. Rex would pursue its prey, to use its powerful maw to decimate all that stood in its way. The slide serrations selected invoke a similar effect, with the three rolling cuts inspiring the impact of the talons as they tore through the soil and prey. The relic finish of the pistol further invokes once more the fossilized nature of this beast, weathered by millions of years of history, but still standing, dominant and proud.
A unique and striking 1911 pistol deserves an equally unique case. Former engineer and master woodworker Mark Huston has constructed a spectacular book enclosure in which T-REX can either be secured and concealed, or tastefully displayed—ready for any storm. The interior features our freedom design fit and boasts another hidden rare earth magnet to hold the gun in place. The case can be placed vertically, like a book on a shelf containing a hidden treasure for a future generation to discover.
This exclusive offering of three pistols is our celebration of the majesty of this predator of a bygone era, and giving them the opportunity to once again roam the Earth as a proud and powerful being, in the only way we know how, through America’s handgun, the 1911.
