Built to Complement APEX JURASSIC, another One-of-a-Kind Cabot 1911
As the sun slips below the horizon of the ancient high plains, the wind-swept grains transform into bristling waves of deep orange streaked with long ominous shadows cast from trees and rocks. With the deep-tonal rattle of its primal growl and a snap of its terrible dagger-shaped fangs the saber-tooth tiger assumes its role as the predator assassin of the ancient Americas. It stalks with nimble agility and silent precision—a carnivorous machine driven by instinct. Suddenly, a gleaming flash distracts its eye. The blackening sky splits as a stream of fire explodes across the heavens. Unfazed by the mystic fire falling from the stars, the apex predator returns to the hunt. It’s been 60-million years since the great meteor laid demise to the great predator dinosaurs and gave rise to the ice age of the Pleistocene era where mammals roam and the Saber-Tooth stands as the pinnacle predator. The saber-tooths would eventually meet their own extinction with their growls silenced and their skeletons strewn in tar pits of the Americas, only to be resurrected eons later by man as archaeological treasures.
A true “art pistol,” the Cabot Guns Apex Fossil was brought to life by award-winning Master Metal Engraver Richard Quecke. The ‘canvas’ is a precision-engineered Cabot Guns 1911 pistol masterfully crafted of Damascus steel, and extraterrestrial meteorite. Master Damascus Blacksmith Jason Morrissey created a unique ‘fossil’ Damascus specifically for this project; the technique creates an incredibly organic texture transforming the slide into a slice of a sedimentary fossil field. The Cabot Guns master gunsmiths utilized an exclusive selective-etch process to provide a perfect stage for Quecke to meld the most elite forms of metal art by hand engraved on artisan Damascus steel. Quecke’s hand carving technique recreates an archaeological dig site, strewing saber-tooth tiger bones across the slide in deep-cut, realistic relief.
The scene is punctuated by a 24kt gold inlay of the iconic saber-shaped fang. Quecke contrasts the “earthy” organics of the skeletal remains with a refined Bulino engraved vignette of a living saber-tooth tiger, its intimidating fangs at the ready, on the meteorite grips representing the material that whose destruction gave life to the rise of the great mammals of the ice ages. The contrast from refined to organic engraving techniques further emphasizes the contrast from life to extinction. The meteorite equally shows up as the trigger on this artful masterpiece, a 4-billion-year-old piece of iron that bears witness to cosmic eras long before the saber-tooth tigers roamed the earth to the present day and to the tip of your shooting finger.
The custom carbon steel frame of the Fossil is finished in Cabot Guns’ Fire and Ice rustic patina to compliment the raw earthiness of the dig site. Small parts and controls are finished in a brushed bronze PVD—bright accents representing the brass tools of the archaeologists whose indomitable drive brings these legendary creatures back to “life.”
The Cabot Guns Fossil is a fully capable high precision 1911 pistol of government length. Enclosed in a case of impeccable refinement of tiger-striped walnut by Master Casemaker S.A Parker. All bones tell a story, and the bones of the Fossil speak of a pistol that was just pulled from an archaeological dig site — raw, authentic, and a captivating piece of fine art.
